In the late 19th century, the city became one of the largest in the state as a center of education, lumber and brewing. Settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1862; Holmen, WI was incorporated in 1946. The city was named for the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, a portage between the Wisconsin and Fox rivers. The lowlands between these rivers served as a natural portage for both Native Americans and eventually French fur traders, who dubbed the area as "le portage." By the 1840s, an industrial and commercial center had developed and remains the city's business district The historic Surgeon's Quarters is the only remaining piece of famous Fort Winnebago built by French settlers in the 1800s.
